Age

by Sarah Grimm on October 31, 2008

`Youth’s a fleeting light,
all too soon covered
by the shadows of old age.
Yet this does not need to
be an inevitable fact –
one can keep the light
burning until death.
This possibility, like all others,
relies on choices
and on the heart’s strength.
Whether they find you
shaking with fear
on the bathroom floor,
depends on your decision
to let the shadows of fear
overcome the light of love.
If you close your eyes to faith,
all you find is your eyelid.
If you open your eyes to grace,
you see truth.
Reflected in every pupil
is the life within.
Be careful, however, with whom
you reveal this image to.
Many take pleasure in
discovering, conquering, and massacring.
Don’t allow your heart to become
like the extinct indigenous tribes of this land.
Protect it, but don’t suffocate it.
Doubt and anxiety are
as dangerous as carelessness.
Balance is necessary,
but don’t make your life
a judicial system.
Time will take care of justice –
she will reveal everything
as she develops.
Only she can tell
if this young love will last.
